Jimbo Fisher continues to defend star quarterback Jameis Winston and says the Florida State quarterback committed no crime and will play vs Notre Dame

The Florida State Seminoles host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a showdown of two undefeated teams ranked in the top five of the polls, but the playing status of Heisman winner Jameis Winston looms large for the defending national champions.

However, Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is confident he will have his star quarterback for Saturday’s home game against Everett Golson and the Fighting Irish, because Winston never committed a crime.

During Monday’s teleconference with the media, Fisher was asked if he had any concerns about the looming disciplinary case involving Winston for a sexual assault accusation that dogged the quarterback for much of last season en route to the Heisman and national championship game.

“None,” Fisher said. “I know the facts of the case. The facts haven’t changed in the case. We know the reports. We know everything that’s out there. There’s nothing new. We’ve been through this.”

Charges were not in the case and Winston did not miss any time as a result of the investigation for the 2012 incident but could be disciplined for breaking the school’s code of conduct rules which could result in probation, suspension or even expulsion.

While the public perception is that Winson is guilty of a crime he was not charged with and Florida State covered up the investigation or stalled the investigation to protect their quarterback so they could win a national title, Fisher pointed to the facts in the matter and the evidence proves there was no crime committed despite the public wanting justice for a crime he wasn’t charged with.

“There’s nothing new come out. Everyone acts like this is earth-shattering,” Fisher said, via the Orlando Sentinel. “It is concerning, but the facts of the case — read the report. Read what’s there. The facts are the facts. That’s what they are. And when I see stories written that don’t have all the facts — that paint them towards their side of public opinion — this country is based on being innocent until proven guilty, not guilty until proven innocent. There are two sides of that. I don’t want a victim for anything, but there is no victim because there was no crime. We’re convicting a guy over things that are not true, based on evidence. Now if that continues yea, but there’s no evidence.”
