Could Kirk Cousins be benched for Colt McCoy?

Kirk Cousins has been playing so poorly for the Washington Redskins that there is starting to be some talk of benching him in favor of third-string signal-caller Colt McCoy.

When Kirk Cousins first took over for an injured Robert Griffin III, it appeared that the starting job could be his throughout the remainder of the season even if RG3 returned at 100 percent.

However, Cousins’ play has plummeted and he has cost his team plenty of opportunities to win games.

In fact, Cousins has two quarters this season where he has thrown three interceptions. Robert Griffin III has never thrown for three picks in a single game. It is clear that Cousins will be giving up the starting job when Griffin returns.

But could we see Cousins benched before then?

There is already some chatter in Washington about Cousins heading to the bench in order to give third-string quarterback Colt McCoy a shot.

From former Redskins player Brian Mitchell and current Comcast SportsNet commentator (via the Washington Post):

"“I think we have to hold Kirk to the same standard we held Robert to. And if Kirk Cousins can’t get the job done, then there’s another quarterback sitting there. Colt McCoy is the next guy out there. I don’t see what the problem would be.”"

While the chatter is starting, it is hard to see Jay Gruden benching Cousins for McCoy. The most likely scenario is that the Redskins will stick it out with Cousins until Griffin is able to return.

Of course, this is the NFL and crazier things have happened.
