Miami Heat begin roster cuts, waive Chris Johnson, Reggie Williams

The Miami Heat entered training camp with 20 players, but are down to 18 after waiving Chris Johnson and Reggie Williams on Monday.

The Miami Heat trimmed their roster to 18 players Monday, waiving center Chris Johnson and guard Reggie Williams.

The Heat announced the moves on their website.

Johnson, 29, played last season for the Zhejiang Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association. He last played in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2012-13.

In 30 games with Minnesota that season, Johnson averaged 3.9 points and two rebounds in 9.5 minutes per game, shooting .640/—/.618.

Johnson signed as a free agent on Sept. 26 and played in one preseason game for the Heat, logging six minutes with a rebound, an assist and a blocked shot.

He was undrafted out of LSU in 2009 and played one season each in Turkey and Poland before returning to the U.S. to play in the D-League. He has also spent time with the Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards and New Orleans Hornets over three NBA seasons.

Williams, 28, played in three games for the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, spending most of the season with the Tulsa 66ers in the D-League.

Williams scored 11 points in 17 minutes for the Thunder, shooting 5-for-9 overall and 1-for-3 from 3-point range.

He did not play in a game for the Heat this preseason after signing with Miami on Aug. 12.

Williams was undrafted out of VMI in 2008 and played in France for two seasons before ending up in the D-League. He has played for the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Bobcats in addition to the Thunder in five NBA seasons.

Miami is embarking on the post-LeBron James era this season after reaching the NBA Finals in each of the last four seasons, winning titles in 2012 and 2013.
