Will Texas come to regret the hiring of Charlie Strong and not hiring Art Briles for the Longhorns job?

The Texas Longhorns did not land their No. 1 target in Nick Saban to be the team’s head coach after Mack Brown stepped down and despite an attractivee candidate in the state of Texas and the Big 12, Texas ultimately hired former Louisville Cardinals head coach Charlie Strong and Paul Finebaum thinks that was the wrong hire.

On Monday’s program on the SEC Network, Finebaum said Texas should have hired Baylor Bears head coach Art Briles who has his team ranked in the top five after scoring 61 points in their come-from-behind win against the TCU Horned Frogs.

Meanwhile, Texas lost the Red River Rivalry game to the Oklahoma Sooners in a game Finebaum referred to as a “gut-wrenching moral victory.”

From the moment Brown resigned as the head coach of Texas, Briles was near the top of the list after the pie-in-the-sky hope that Saban would leave Alabama for Texas, and why wouldn’t he be after what he’s done at Baylor?

Briles has built the Baylor program to one of the top in the nation and a consistent threat in the Big 12 with an offense capable of scoring 60 points every game and is 35-10 since 2010 and 11-1 the last two years in the conference.

In his seventh season in Waco, Briles commented about his interest and the interest from Texas in replacing Brown in Austin.

Briles has a great thing going at Baylor, but if Texas showed a stronger interest (more money) then it is possible Briles could be the head man for Texas and won’t have to worry about slowing down his high-powered offenses for the foreseeable future.

Whether Strong ultimately brings Big 12 titles back to the tradition-rich Texas program or not remains to be seen, but how many Texas fans would prefer to have Briles right about now?
