NBA coaches used to run player into the ground during practices. Alonzo Mourning once spoke of being driven to tears and vomit by Pat Riley during a practice. Jeff Van Gundy is infamous for running players to exhaustion in practice.
Now, NBA teams hardly practice. Instead, they watch film and go through a shoot around before games.
New Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder may run a modern offense but, when it comes to practice, he’s old school.
From Mike Sorensen for the Deseret News.
"“I don’t think there’s a team working harder than us in the first two weeks of the season in the NBA, no matter how many days we’ve had off,’’ he said.Snyder, whose team held a spirited two-hour practice Saturday at Zions Bank Basketball Center, went on to say that a team has to practice smart besides a lot.“My basic philosophy is practice and try to get better every day,’’ he said. “Some days you can inundate them with a lot of information and they need to process it and some days are spent getting shots. I feel as long as they practice hard we can be smart as far as how we practice.’’"
A couple of his players, Steve Novak and Enes Kanter, added that the practices aren’t so much hard but focused. So while Snyder isn’t completely reverting to the old mantra of “practice harder than you play,” if his emphasis on practice continues into the regular season that will certainly be unique.
Some teams, like the San Antonio Spurs, don’t need as much practice. It’s a well oiled machine that knows what to do on offense and prefers to watch film in order to attack its opponents. The Jazz, however, are incorporating a brand new horns system and will need all the practice they can get.
