The Royals scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead in Game 3 of the ALCS. When that run crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly ball to left field, the buzz in Kauffman Stadium was real.
Those fans, eager for successful baseball in Kansas City after such a long wait, were not just cheering because of the importance of each run in the American League Championship Series. They were cheering because they know what happens next. They know what happens when their team carries a one-run lead into the 7th inning of a game.
Kelvin Herrera happens. And then Wade Davis happens. And then Greg Holland happens. And then the people of Kansas City rejoice. Sure enough, the Royals won again on Tuesday night because of run prevention. Good defense and good pitching made a 2-1 lead stand up, and Kansas City is now one game away from the World Series.
Jeremy Guthrie did just what he needed to as the starting pitcher for the Royals in this game. He went five innings, gave up one run, and got the ball to his bullpen.
Jarrod Dyson, he who famously predicted that this series would not return to Baltimore, came on as a pinch runner in the 6th with the game tied 1-1. Eric Hosmer singled him over to third base, and Billy Butler hit the sacrifice fly to score the deciding run.
Baltimore continues to play well; they just continue to come up one hit or one play short in tightly contested baseball games. Wei-Yin Chen and Kevin Gausman combined to pitch an outstanding game for the Orioles. Unfortunately for them, their only offense was one run on a J.J. Hardy double in the second inning.
From there Baltimore couldn’t get anything going, with outstanding defensive plays from Mike Moustakas, Hosmer, and others as the Royals won another low-scoring game. The highlight of the night had to be this catch from Moustakas as he fell over the railing on the third base side in foul territory.
The Royals, man. 7-0 in the playoffs and one win away from the World Series. Things are getting real in Kansas City.
