As far as the Heisman Watch is concerned, the landscape took another shift this weekend as well.
Checking in with the Heisman Pundit Straw Poll, one of the most accurate rankings in the business, we see a shuffle near the top after. With a few top teams falling and a handful of other top teams showing well, some players found themselves becoming a bigger factor in the Heisman race.
Here is how the Straw Poll looks heading into week 8:
The HeismanPundit.com Heisman Straw Poll, 10/14/2014
Total Points (with first place votes in parentheses)
1. Dak Prescott, QB, Miss. State — 25 (7)
2. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon — 21 (3)
3. Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin — 4
4. (tie) Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor — 2
Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama — 2
6. (tie) Bo Wallace, QB, Ole Miss — 1
Everett Golson, QB, Notre Dame — 1
Buck Allen, RB, USC — 1
Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana — 1
Shaq Thompson, LB, Washington — 1
Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia — 1
Obviously the thing that is first noticed is the massive fall that Georgia running back Todd Gurley has taken. After violating NCAA rules, he likely is facing a long suspension even if his season isn’t over. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston has been removed from the list altogether.
Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott sits atop the rankings, while Oregon’s Marcus Mariota has creeped right back into the discussion as well.
Look for this list to continue to shift throughout the rest of the season, and for the top two guys to start to pull away from the pack.
