Jake Locker may not be ready for Week 7 after having missed the previous week with a thumb injury.

The Tennessee Titans made do in Week 6 without starting quarterback Jake Locker, pulling out a close win over the winless Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the team may have to once again play without their starting quarterback as Locker has still yet to be cleared for practice after injuring his thumb in the team’s Week 5 home loss to the Cleveland Browns.

While Locker still has time to get back into the lineup before the Week 7 depth chart is set, coach Ken Whisenhunt was non-committal when asked about Locker’s chances of starting or even playing in the game.

“When you ask Jake, he says it is getting better,” Whisenhunt said via The Tennessean. “It is really going to come down to when he can grip the ball and throw it and not have issues.”

Fortunately, the Titans don’t have to rush Jake Locker back because backup Charlie Whitehurst hasn’t been a complete disaster as a backup. He has three touchdowns to one pick and he snagged a win against the Jaguars. Make no mistake though, when Locker returns, he’ll be the starter once again.

“Nothing has changed with our quarterbacks,” Whisenhunt said. “We are working to get Jake healthy, and when he is healthy, our goal is to get him (out) there.”

It also helps the Titans to know that their Week 7 opponent will be the vulnerable Washington Redskins, who sit a game worse than the Titans at 1-5. Tennessee might be better served in starting Whitehurst against Washington with the intent of saving Locker for the team’s final game before the bye week, when the Titans host divisional rival Houston Texans.
