The Carolina Hurricanes have called up Brody Sutter from the AHL as their store of healthy roster players grows thin

The Carolina Hurricanes cannot seem to catch a break this season.

The team knew it would encounter some trouble early on, when forward Jordan Staal broke his leg in the preseason. Now, the team is also down Patrick Dwyer (IR) and captain Eric Staal (upper body injury), who were both hurt during the team’s matchup against the New York Islanders on Saturday night. It seems probable that Jeff Skinner will be down for the count, as well, as he was placed on injured reserve earlier this week- so the team is calling up what seems like hordes of players from their minor league affiliates.

In addition to Zach Boychuk, the Hurricanes have called Brody Sutter up from the Charlotte Checkers, who are the Canes’ AHL affiliate.

According to Pro Hockey Talk, Sutter is one of over 700 Sutters to play professional hockey. His father is former NHL-er Duane Sutter, and his uncle is LA Kings’ head coach Darryl Sutter. He currently plays for the Checkers with his cousin, Brett Sutter, and his cousin Brandon Sutter was a member of the Hurricanes from 2009-2012.

While the call-up may seem like good news for Sutter and Boychuk, it means nothing good for the Carolina franchise. They sit tied for dead last in the league with the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers, as they have yet to win a game.
