Can New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith turn things around this season?

The New York Jets are currently sitting at 1-5 and are in last place of the AFC East, and quarterback Geno Smith has looked pretty bad so far this season. He showed some potential last season of being a starting caliber quarterback, but he has been unable to play consistent football. This year, the question has come up of whether or not the Jets should keep Smith as the starter and whether or not he can turn things around.

So far this season, Smith has thrown for 1,139 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions. Those numbers are obviously not starting quality, and he hasn’t shown many bright spots at all. Both of the first two games of the season were decent, but since then things have been going downhill very quickly.

Rex Ryan is fighting for his job this season as well, and it will be interesting to see how much longer he decides to hang on to Smith as his starting quarterback. Michael Vick did come in for a half against the San Diego Chargers, and threw for 47 yards in the contest. Vick isn’t exactly the quarterback that the Jets need to start either, but he would at least bring some playmaking ability and veteran experience to the table.

Can Smith turn things around this season with the Jets?

Obviously the general public thought is that he can’t turn things around, but there are ways that he could improve moving forward. First of all, he has to stop forcing the football and trying to make plays that simply aren’t there. Secondly, he needs to use his legs to make plays more often than he does. He has the ability to make plays on the ground, but he hasn’t done that too much this year.

Those two things need to be improved upon immediately if he wants to turn his season around, but even then it will be difficult. It is becoming increasingly obvious that Smith does not have an NFL caliber arm, and he doesn’t have an NFL caliber mental game either. Smith is facing a major uphill battle to turn things around, and the Jets may have to pull the plug at some point in the next couple of weeks.
