Coming off a spectacular post-season, John Gibson isn’t quite living up to the hype

John Gibson burst onto the scene during the post-season this past spring for Anaheim, when he recorded his first shutout with the team in his first NHL playoff game.

More from Anaheim Ducks

The then 20-year-old netminder was heralded as some sort of second coming in Anaheim, and the rookie was announced on the team’s starting roster for the start of the 2014-2015 season.

Gibson struggled out of the gate for the Ducks, though, allowing six goals on 39 SOG’s by the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday night. He was replaced in net by fellow netminder Frederick Andersen; it seems that he wants some playing time to freshen up, and therefore might have requested to head down to the Norfolk Admirals for a few games.

While Gibson plays in Norfolk, AHL goaltender Jason LaBarbera has been called up to replace him on the bench. Frederik Andersen will most likely serve as the team’s clear number one starter, at least until Gibson can figure out his playing style.

Fans might be concerned by the call-down, but Gibson is only 21; very few goaltenders have fully developed by this point in their career. After two games, the team has suggested that he will return to Anaheim. Hopefully, the young netminder will have a chance to clear his head in Norfolk, receiving additional playing time and getting his shaky start out of his head.
