HBO Chairman and CEO Richard Plepler announced that the premium cable network will offer a stand-alone streaming service in 2015.

When it comes to the world of online streaming services, names like Netflix and Hulu Plus have always been the first names to come to mind. If HBO has their way, which it looks like they will, you will be adding HBO to that list sooner rather than later.

HBO Chairman and CEO Richard Plepler announced today that the premium cable network will offer a stand-alone streaming service in 2015.

This is a bold move by HBO to tap into a market that is virtually untouched by them at the moment.

According to the press release there are currently ten million broadband-only homes that at the current moment have no access to HBO or any of its services. This leaves the perfect market for expansion for HBO.

"“That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped. It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO.” Plepler said in the press release."

HBO is the premium service responsible for some of the best shows on television right now. HBO bred shows like True Blood, which just aired its final season this year, as well as shows like Boardwalk Empire, The Leftovers, Silicon Valley, and so many more.

The network is most well-known for the HBO Original Series Game of Thrones, which grabbed the world by storm back in April of 2011 and hasn’t stopped since.

The new streaming service is the perfect option for the consumer who wants to watch shows like Game of Thrones, but doesn’t necessarily need eight channels of HBO as it is distributed in most cable and satellite formats.

At this particular point and time, there are no details available as to how the service will be distributed, the actual date in which it will launch, how much it will cost, or anything along those lines.
