Throughout the entire season this year, Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg has been stuck behind an offensive line in Happy Valley that is not all that good, for lack of a better explanation. They just aren’t. Because of this, you would assume that the sophomore is not happy, and if you do assume that, you are correct.
In speaking to the media on Tuesday, Penn State head coach James Franklin, when asked about Hackenberg’s mindset, noted that his quarterback is indeed frustrated. However, he’s keeping a cool head with his teammates, which is always a good sign.
"I talked to Christian after the game. I talked to him on Sunday; we practiced on Sunday. I’ll talk to him again today. He’s like a lot of us. He’s a competitor, he wants us to play well and wants us to win. He wants to be able to play well and all those things. He’s frustrated and we’re all looking at ourselves at things that we can do better. But, he’s been really good. He’s been really good with his teammates, he’s been really good with the coaches. He came up to me on Sunday and we discussed a few things right before practice started. He’s a competitor and he’s been really good."
Through six games this season, Hackenberg has thrown for 1,637 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. While some of those seven picks were the culmination of some bad decisions, that also goes back to him not having enough time in the pocket to do his work. The unfortunate part is that, given the sanctions from the past few years, things might not be getting better anytime soon.
