Chicago Blackhawks Cannot Get Puck Past Jonas Hiller; Fall To Calgary Flames
Jonas Hiller could carry his team far this season, as he stops 49 pucks for a 2-1 Calgary win over the Blackhawks
In what looked like a superhuman feat of goaltending, Calgary Flames starting netminder stopped 49 SOG by the tricky, talented Chicago Blackhawks to lead his team to a 2-1 overtime victory Wednesday night.
The Blackhawks have had a couple of close call games so far this season, but they assumed this one was in the bag. The Calgary Flames have a less-than-stellar on ice presence, as the club got outshot 50-18 over the course of three periods and won the majority of the night’s faceoffs.

Should the Flames make it to the playoffs this year, though, it will largely be due to their brand-new netminder, Jonas Hiller. The 32-year-old Swiss goalie was let go by the Anaheim Ducks at the end of last season to make room for youngsters Frederick Andersen and John Gibson; since the season has started, though, Hiller has posted a stronger SV% (.934) than either remaining Anaheim goalie- while skating for the lesser franchise. The younger of the two, John Gibson, has even seemingly requested a couple games back in the AHL to shake off his early-season jitters.
The Flames were assumed to be in a rebuild period, with a talented but unrefined young roster making its emergence this year under the leadership of “Johnny Hockey” Gadreau. The skaters themselves have been outplayed by almost every team they’ve encountered so far- yet Hiller has the team sitting on a 3-2 record.
The Blackhawks looked good, but this is their second game of three to go into OT- the only blowout game the franchise has recorded thus far has been against the struggling Buffalo Sabres. They go on to play the Nashville Predators Saturday night, while the Flames do not play again until they face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday.
