The Maxwell Award, given annually to the best college football player as voted on by a panel of media and coaches, had added 11 players to its watch list for 2014.

Because 75 players obviously wasn’t enough, the Maxwell Football Club announced this week that 11 players have been added to its watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the best player in college football as judged by a panel comprised of media and coaches.

Added to the list this week were:

  • Auburn RB Cameron Artis-Payne
  • Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett
  • TCU QB Trevone Boykin
  • Minnesota RB David Cobb
  • Indiana RB Tevin Coleman
  • Washington State QB Connor Halliday
  • Texas A&M QB Kenny Hill
  • Oklahoma RB Samaje Perine
  • Arizona QB Anu Solomon
  • West Virginia QB Clint Trickett
  • Clemson QB Deshaun Watson

It’s worth pointing out that Watson is currently sidelined by an injury and is probably a long shot to win the award.

That swells the watch list for the award to 86 players, although it is possible that inclusion on the watch list is more of an honorable mention type of thing than an actual chance to win the award.

After all, the watch list also includes the likes of Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller, who won’t play a down this season because of a shoulder injury; Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner, who has played so well this season that coach Brady Hoke opted to bench him and then leave in a quarterback with a concussion rather than give the offense back to him; and Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel (no explanation needed).

Last year’s winner was Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, which marked the third straight year that the Maxwell went to a player other than the one who won the Heisman Trophy. Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o was given the Maxwell in 2012 (unless we imagined it) and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was the 2011 winner.

The last Heisman/Maxwell double winner was Auburn’s Cam Newton in 2010.
