The New England Patriots got a big win on Sunday but suffered a couple of key losses. Today, Jerod Mayo underwent successful surgery on his torn patellar tendon.

Sunday, the New England Patriots took on the Buffalo Bills in a game that many saw as a potential trap for Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Thanks to a complete game, the Patriots came out on top, but the cost is going to be pretty significant. New England saw Stevan Ridley and Jerod Mayo both have their 2014 NFL season’s come to an end.

Ridley ended up tearing his ACL, while Mayo suffered the same fate many saw Victor Cruz deal with in prime time on Monday Night. Tearing his patellar tendon, Mayo underwent surgery on Thursday.

To put the pain both Mayo and Cruz experienced into perspective, a tearing of the patellar tendon is a separation of the components that attach a knee cap to the shin. Greg Childs, a former Arkansas Razorbacks wide receiver, watched a promising draft stock plummet as he dealt with the injury on both knees, multiple times throughout his career.

Mayo will now begin a very lengthy rehabilitation process, and his status will both the Patriots and his NFL career will remain up in the air.

Losing Mayo, and playing on a short week, the Patriots find themselves in a less than enviable position. Despite playing against the lowly Jets and Geno Smith, injuries are beginning to mount. A thin defensive line and linebacking corps will be in search of contributors.

Last week against the Buffalo Bills, it was a sixth round pick from Concordia University St. Paul, Zach Moore, that made the big play for the Patriots; scooping up a big C.J. Spiller fumble right before the end of the half.

On a night the Ty Law is set to be honored, and Darrelle Revis faces his former team, look for the Patriots to have plenty of fire to play with. Mayo’s loss will be felt, but his teammates will likely rise to the occasion.

Thursday Night Football kicks off from Foxboro at 8:25 pm ET.
