The New York Knicks are going to have plenty of cap room after the season once Andrea Bargnani and Amaer’e Stoudemire will come off of the books and they will be looking to upgrade in order to become one of the
‘s elite teams.
Rather than pursuing superstars right away, Lang Greene of Basketball Insiders suggests the Knicks pursue a player like Indiana Pacers’ power forward David West.
"I know everyone wants to think about the second star the Knicks are going to pursue, but first they need to get more assets who can thrive in the Triangle Offense. This is important. Phil Jackson’s Bulls and Lakers squads always had role players who understood their place in the pecking order, didn’t cause waves and produced. First thing the Knicks need is a power forward who can shoot it from mid-range consistently. I would look at a veteran like David West who could serve as one of those Horace Grant type of contributors offensively. You know a 10-12 point guys who grabs 6-8 boards. D-West is excellent from mid-range."
David West is a perfect glue guy and would bring toughness to the Knicks. He also has a very nice jumper, which is something Phil Jackson has always liked from his power forwards and something Derek Fisher would like to have as well. He’d also provide veteran leadership and stability in the locker room. Should the Pacers decide to tank this season, it could be a real option. If not, he has a player option worth $12.6 million for the 2015-2016 season.
West averaged 14.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 48.8% from the floor, 26.7% from beyond the arc and 78.9% from the free throw line last season. In his career, he’s put up 15.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 49.1% from the field, 25.6% from three and 82.5% from the charity stripe.
