33. Final. 6. 40. 4

The San Francisco Giants held on for a win at home in Game 4 of the NLCS, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 6-4 and extending their series lead to 3-1.

Playing on a typically chilly night in front of a typically raucous home crowd at AT&T Park, the San Francisco Giants pulled off a typical victory. Well, it is typical for them at least, though it would be decidedly atypical for any other team.

The Giants were down 4-1 in this game, a massive deficit by postseason standards. Like they always do, the Giants chipped away at the lead, capitalized on mistakes from the Cardinals, and mounted the comeback to win this game 6-4. San Francisco is now one game away from another berth in the World Series.

The Cardinals charged out to an early lead with four runs in the first three innings off Ryan Vogelsong. That was punctuated by a Kolten Wong home run.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, their starting pitcher Shelby Miller did not last much longer. He could not make it out of the fourth inning, surrendering RBI singles to Buster Posey and Hunter Pence. That made this a battle of the bullpens.

In need of long relief, Yusmeiro Petit held the fort again for the Giants, delivering three shutout innings. For those who do not remember, Petit is the same guy who went six innings in San Francisco’s 18-inning win in the NLDS.

The Giants took their lead in this game with a three-run sixth inning. What happened, of course, but a string of singles and opportunistic runs scored. With runners on third, the Giants put the ball in play twice on grounders that did not leave the infield, because that’s so Giants.

Twice it rolled to Matt Adams. Twice he made bad throws, one of them to home and one of them to second base. Twice the Giants scored runs. Posey then drove in another run to stretch the lead to 6-4.

Madison Bumgarner will take the mound on Thursday with the chance to pitch his team into the World Series at home. That is the best-case scenario for the Giants as they try to punch their tickets to a showdown with the Kansas City Royals. As for the Cardinals, they now face the tall task of fending off elimination in a hostile environment against the best pitcher in these playoffs.
