Ryan Whitney Signs With The KHL
Ryan Whitney seems to be a good sport about his new career in the KHL
According to NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, former NHL-er Ryan Whitney (who is not Ray Whitney, to clear up any confusion) has taken his services overseas, signing a one-year contract with HC Sochi of the KHL.

The veteran skater has played in 481 games in the NHL and skated with the US Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team in Vancouver, when the team took home the silver medal. He was originally drafted back in 2002, when the Pittsburgh Penguins selected him 5th overall.
Whitney seems to be taking the move overseas pretty well, making a crack about finally achieving his dream to play in Sochi. The blue liner was one of multiple veterans signed to PTO’s by the St. Louis Blues this off-season who failed to make the cut; in addition to Whitney, former fan favorite Paul Bissonnette found himself ousted by the Blues weeks before the NHL season began.
During his time in the NHL, Whitney played multiple seasons for each the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Anaheim Ducks, and the Edmonton Oilers. He last played for the Florida Panthers during the 2013-2014 season, spending most of his time playing for the team’s AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. He is best characterized as an offensive defenseman.
