The Sacramento Kings didn’t seem all that interested in retaining point guard Isaiah Thomas in the offseason and sent him to the Phoenix Suns in a sign-and-trade.
They replaced him with Darren Collison and Ramon Sessions. Both are nice players but the Kings are clearly looking to further upgrade their talent.
Lange Greene of Basketball Insiders could see the Kings making a run at Boston Celtics’ point guard Rajon Rondo.
"But all you need is one team to sip the Kool-Aid and something could get jump started … with the quickness. Rondo has plenty of friends around the league and guys who would like to play with him. Houston might be a good fit. Or a team looking to become relevant like Sacramento could take a look. So while most teams aren’t going to sell the barn to grab him, the man is still an All-Star level performer who will put in all of the work needed to win. Let me repeat. Say what you want about Rondo, but the man puts in the work and plays to win.You have to respect that."
Rajon Rondo would obviously provide a massive upgrade and would likely team well with Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins. Of course, the Kings would need to acquire more shooters and develop the ones they have, but if you build a playoff team, you can find role players.
Rajon Rondo averaged 11.7 points, 9.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 40.3% from the field, 28.9% from beyond the arc and 62.7% from the free throw line last season. Rajon Rondo has averaged 11.1 points, 8.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 47.5% from the floor, 25.2% from three and 62.1% from the free throw line in his eight-year NBA career.
