Ex-South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia left little to the imagination when asked about his thoughts on SEC athletes getting paid

Former South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia spoke his mind regarding players getting paid in an interview with a Charlotte radio station.

Garcia was asked if he had seen players receiving money or exchanging autographs or memorabilia for cash payments. While his response merited a giggle or two from the hosts, his response was very interesting.

“I saw it all day, every day to be honest with you,” he said. “I wish they came to me, but they thought of me as some rich white kid, so I didn’t really get benefits from that.

“I’m just being honest with you. I saw it firsthand with a lot of players and talking with other guys. You know, I’m friends with a lot of players from around the SEC, and talking with them, it makes the Todd Gurley thing seem insignificant by a long shot.”

When Garcia was asked about the largest amount of money he’d heard of in a autograph deal, he replied, “160,000.”

Garcia, who had a checkered career at South Carolina, which ended with a suspension during his final year of eligibility in 2011, made his case for college athletes to make money off of their likeness.

“Absolutely, I don’t see why that’s such a punishable offense,” Garcia said. “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that these kids can’t profit from their name, their likeness, sign their name on their own jersey. I don’t understand that and I really hope that rule changes. It’s mind-boggling to me, to be honest with you.”

Garcia most recently played with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League.
