The New York Knicks clearly want to pair high-scoring forward Carmelo Anthony with a star and they may soon have the ammunition to do it. The contracts of both Amar’e Stoudemire ($23,410,988) and Andrea Bargnani ($11,500,000) are up at the end of the season, taking just under $35 million off of the books.

How realistic is it that they can add a star? Although the New York Knicks know 2016 could be a huge year for free agency, they will likely try to land a big fish in 2015 and Memphis Grizzlies’ center Marc Gasol is reportedly their No. 1 target.

According to Moke Hamilton of Basketball Insiders, the New York, Knicks will be very attractive to free agents.

"The other really important thing to consider is this: the salary cap is going to see major gains over the next few seasons. The Knicks are one of the few teams in the entire league that has their cornerstone locked up on a five year deal… Three years from now, based on the new cap numbers and max. salaries… Paying Carmelo $25 million may actually be considered good.In theory, the Knicks could add Marc Gasol and Kevin Durant over the next two seasons, though I wouldn’t call it likely… Something like that happening could certainly make the difference for the Knicks."

Obviously, adding two players like that is a very lofty and probably unrealistic goal but it is certainly possible the two All-Star caliber players want to team with Anthony. In a day and age where stars are bolting, the Knicks have their stud locked up for the next five years.
