A few years ago there were a lot of people that believed a feud between Stone Cold Steve Austin and CM Punk was more or less inevitable. With Punk being the modern-day version of Austin in regards to debunking the authority in the company, it seemed likely that Austin would come out of retirement and these two would clash one day.
Well, as we know now, things didn’t quite work out that way for various reasons, but that doesn’t mean that WWE wasn’t ready to give us what we all wanted to see, eventually.
According to a new report from PWInsider, when Punk was becoming a mainstream star a few years back, there were tentative plans in place to slowly build to a battle between the two.
"Even though the dream match may not come to fruition, a recent report by PWInsider shows that WWE may have had distant plans for the colossal encounter. According to the website, WWE really had plans for a Punk vs. Austin match, planning for it as early as WrestleMania in 2012."
As it turns out, Punk ended up defending the WWE Championship against Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 28, but even then they were still planning the encounter, shooting angles of Punk walking to the ring the same way that Austin does, something they would be able to use for promotional video packages.
Will we ever see this encounter? Well with Punk basically shunning the entire sport and Austin shooting down rumors of a return, it doesn’t seem all that likely.
However, if pro wrestling has ever taught us anything, it’s to never say never.
