The Arizona Coyotes have found their scorepower this season in the form of forward Mikkel Boedker

As someone who kind of writes about the Arizona Coyotes for a living, I’ve become all too familiar with the name Mikkel Boedker.

Drafted eighth overall in 2008 by the Coyotes back when they were still “Phoenix”, Boedker was selected at the same time as big names across the league, such as Jeremy Roenick and Derian Hatcher (and if you get why I listed both of them, let’s be best friends). The team hoped the Danish forward would bring the team the scorepower they have struggled to find since Roenick left the team behind right before retirement.

Not all first-round picks live up to their original hype, though, and it seemed like Boedker was headed that way. His first full season with the Coyotes saw him fall just short of the 20-goal mark; a growing number of fans were worried that he was destined to befall the fate of so many players pushed into the NHL too early.

The start of the 2014-2015 has pushed most of the doubts surrounding Boedker out of fans’ heads, though. The 24-year-old winger has recorded at least one goal per game, rounding off a 7-4 victory for the Coyotes over the Edmonton Oilers with his first-ever career hat trick. He currently sits at second overall in the league for goals scored (5), and sixth overall for points (6) as the team heads into only it’s fourth game of the season.

Now, he will look to continue his hot streak as the Pacific Division team faces off against the St. Louis Blues Saturday night. Both teams are looking for a win tonight, which would push the Blues closer to the top eight in the Western Conference- but would push the Coyotes into either the top five or the top six, higher than the team has been since before goalie Mike Smith got injured last season.
