Brian Roberts, who spent 13 of his 14 big-league seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, will retire from MLB after this season at age 37.

Former Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is retiring from MLB, he announced yesterday. Roberts spent most of the 2014 season with the New York Yankees, and was released in August after hitting five home runs and slashing .237/.300/.360 in 91 games and 317 at bats. The second baseman said he had interest from two “very good” teams after he was released, but Roberts decided to retire instead.

Roberts had spent his previous 13 seasons with the O’s, who drafted him in the supplemental first round, 50th overall, in 1999. He was in MLB for good by 2001, and started the 2005 All-Star Game at second base, representing Baltimore, and was an all-star in 2007 as well.

Injuries robbed Roberts of most of the past five seasons; after 2009, Roberts never played in more than 91 games (this past season with New York), and he played in only 56 games from 2011 through 2012. It didn’t help Roberts’s image than he missed most of the time after he signed a four-year, $40-million-dollar extension with the Orioles before the 2010 season, but when he was healthy, Roberts was quite productive. He never played in a playoff game, but Roberts retries from MLB second on the Baltimore all-time list in steals, and ranks in the top 10 in hits, runs scored and doubles.
