Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers woke up to good news on Sunday morning as they prepare for their NFC showdown with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
Rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin has cleared the league’s concussion protocol and will be able to play. He suffered the concussion last week against the Cincinnati Bengals. His status had been held in doubt for much of the week, but there were promising signs this weekend and now Benjamin will officially be active.
According to Ian Rapoport:
The timing would have been lousy for the Panthers to be without their best wide-out: Newton looked like his true, dual-threat self for the first time this season in last week’s tie against the Bengals. He threw the ball beautifully, but more importantly, he rushed the ball 17 times for over 100 yards.
In order for that dual-threat to actually be scary for opposing defenses, Newton needs targets in the passing game. Tight end Greg Olsen and Benjamin are clearly the top guys for Newton in that regard. The Packers will have their hands full on defense in this intriguing week 7 game.
So far in his rookie season, Benjamin has 31 catches for 416 yards and four touchdowns. He still looks raw at times, but he continues to get better and more comfortable with Newton and the Panthers’ offense.
