There seems to be an epidemic of NFL players getting ejected for making contact with the referees on this NFL Sunday. Just minutes after Indianapolis Colts linebacker Erik Walden was ejected for breaking this rule, Carolina Panthers linebacker–and reigning Defensive Player of the Year–Luke Kueckly was ejected from his game against the Green Bay Packers.
After getting up from a play in which he was tangled up with a Packer’s player, Kuechly was clearly aggravated when he got up and was seemingly fixing his face mask when a referee came in to move him away from the play.
It’s unclear if Kuechly even knew it was a ref moving him, and he started throwing his arms around to get the person off him. He was ejected after.
Clearly Kuechly touched the referee and it was quite violent considering these zebras don’t wear pads but I’m not sure, due to the confusion on the play, it was worth a full-blown ejection. A flag would have sufficed. Considering this happened in another game it is quite possible referees were given instruction to crack down on this–as if we needed another thing players could get flagged for.
