It went all the way down to the wire in what may have been the game of the year so far in college football, but Florida State survived an amazing effort from Notre Dame to extend their winning streak to 23 games.
The Top 5 showdown on Saturday night between the Florida State Seminoles and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lived up to the billing as these two powerhouses turned in maybe the game of the year. But when all was said and done in Tallahassee, it was the ‘Noles that walked away with a 31-27 win.
Drama in this one went down to the wire, with Notre Dame having the ball last. Everett Golson, who turned in the performance of his life. In the waning moments of the game, he got his team in a position to win it.
Then at one point, you could feel the life sucked out of Doak Campbell Stadium when it appeared Notre Dame scored the game-winning touchdown pass from Golson to Corey Robinson, who finished the game with 99 yards on eight catches with two touchdowns, with just seconds to go on the clock, but it was called back for a pick on wide receiver Kyle Fuller. From that point, Notre Dame was pushed back and Golson and the Irish had one last gasp, but it was intercepted in the end zone.
Florida State just barely survived this one, as they didn’t grab their first and only lead of the game until the fourth quarter on a Karlos Williams touchdown run.
With the win, the Seminoles have now extended their winning streak to 23 games, and given the rest of their ACC schedule, are on track to get themselves into the College Football Playoff to defend their title. Notre Dame, though, still has a chance to finish the regular season with just one loss and play on New Year’s Day.
