‘ point guard Rajon Rondo reportedly asked for a trade earlier in the offseason. However, both sides continue to deny the report. In fact, Rajon Rondo has expressed his desire to stay in Boston and even says he believes the Celtics can make the playoffs.
“I believe in Danny (Ainge) and I said it a month ago,” Rajon Rondo told Mark Murphy of The Boston Herald. I’ve been through it. One year we were the worst team in the league and the next we were the best,” he said of the wild swing between his rookie season and the 2008 Celtics championship team. “Anything can happen. Injuries are a big factor in your success. The trade deadline is a big factor. That’s what makes the NBA exciting.
“But if you give me four guys who are going to compete and play as hard as possible, then I feel like I can win every game.”
Rajon Rondo believes everyone simply needs to buy into head coach Brad Stevens’ plan.
“The key for any successful team is for everyone to buy in, and he has everyone believing in his plan,” said Rondo. “If we continue to do that, we’re going to surprise a lot of people.”
Even if Rajon Rondo is healthy, getting into the postseason would be tough. Plus, with so many young players, the Celtics might be better off striking a deal and handing the reigns to the sixth-overall pick, Marcus Smart.
Last season, Rajon Rondo averaged 11.7 points, 9.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 40.3% from the field, 28.9% from beyond the arc and 62.7% from the free throw line. Rajon Rondo has averaged 11.1 points, 8.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 47.5% from the floor, 25.2% from three and 62.1% from the free throw line in his eight-year NBA career.
