Florida State remained undefeated with a thrilling game against Notre Dame on Saturday, but on Monday Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher was upset about questions about Jameis Winston

Jimbo Fisher is no stranger to fielding questions about his Heisman-winning quarterback Jameis Winston over the last two years, but the head coach of the defending champion Florida State Seminoles ended an interview early as a result of questions about his quarterback’s off-the-field issues.

Winston has a looming disciplinary hearing with the university to determine if he violated the school’s code of conduct for his involvement in a 2012 sexual assault in which no charged were filed against him. Depending on the outcome of the hearing Winston could be suspended or even expelled, but Fisher was irked when asked too many questions about a topic he thought was off limits.

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Solomon, “Fisher said he was told by the Birmingham Monday Morning Quarterback Club, located not far from Winston’s hometown, there would be no questions about Winston’s off-the-field issues. Media members were not told of any restrictions on questions that were tied to Fisher’s availability.”

  • So when Fisher was first asked if there was any news to relay about the disciplinary hearing that resulted in this response, “We’re moving on with Louisville and talking about the other things,” Fisher said. “Everything should be great.”

Everything was not great for Fisher after that when he was asked if his reputation has taken a hit for defending Winston.

"“Why is my reputation taking a hit? For backing a kid who has done nothing wrong?” Fisher said. “I don’t want to get into this. The questions weren’t supposed to be asked today. I’m done. I’m done.”"

This is not the first time that a head coach has ended an interview prematurely, not will it be the last, but because it is Florida State and involves the polarizing Winston, you can imagine that Fisher will be criticized heavily for not answering the questions directed at him whether he thought it was off limits or not.

Florida State is ranked No. 2 in the nation and Winston is 20-0 as a starter, including the BCS National Champioship Game last year, but no matter what Fisher says about his talented quarterback, the public perception is that he’s digging himself a deeper hole rather than defending his player which any good coach would do.
