The
have until October 31 to work out extension with their two best returning players, forward Tobias Harris and center Nikola Vucevic. The Magic have expressed their desire to lock them down but it looks more and more like they will hit restricted free agency in the 2015
offseason.
Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders does not think the two sides will get a deal done.
"Does not seem like it.Rob Hennigan told me at media day that he wanted both on the team in the long-term, but reaching a deal now versus letting the market set the price was still up in the air. This is a fluid process that can change rapidly, but as of today, it does not seem like a deal is coming. We’ll see if that evolves. This sort of happens every year – agents say we’re not close, we’re turning the page and then at 11:00pm at the deadline they make a deal."
That could spell trouble for the Magic. Plenty of teams are expected to have a lot of cap room and the top three available players – Cleveland Cavaliers‘ power forward Kevin Love, Portland Trail Blazers‘ power forward LaMarcus Aldridge and Memphis Grizzlies‘ center Marc Gasol – are all expected to remain with their teams. That could mean teams throw big money at Tobias Harris and Nikola Vucevic in restricted free agency.
Tobias Harris put up 14.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 46.4% from the field, 25.4% from beyond the arc and 80.7% from the charity stripe. Nikola Vucevic averaged 14.2 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 50.7% from the field and 76.6% from the free throw line last season.
