Detroit Red Wings place Johan Franzen on injured reserve for the next calendar week

The Detroit Red Wings are no stranger to injury. Last season saw them watch an almost revolving door of players going on and off the injured reserve list, and it seems like this season will be no different.

Johan Franzen, who had been heating up for the Red Wings with 2 goals and 3 assists in his first four games, is the most recent casualty for the Atlantic Division franchise. He has been confirmed as placed on injured reserve for the next seven days. He left the Red Wings’ 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday during the middle of the game, and neither returned that night nor the next day for the second in a two-game series between the franchises.

While the forward being out isn’t good news for the Detroit team, this provides a convenient opening on the roster for newly-returning Pavel Dastyuk. The veteran has been on the injured reserve list since preseason, when he suffered a shoulder injury during one of the September games. He was one of a number of star centers across the league to go down during preseason play, and will be one of the last to return to the game.

Although he will be out for at least seven days, there is no word as to whether or not Franzen could be facing a longer vacation from the game.
