Things just seem to be getting worse and worse when it comes to the domestic violence case surrounding Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov.

Earlier this morning, it was announced that the twenty four year old Russian defenseman had been indefinitely suspended by the National Hockey League pending an investigation by the league into the charges being brought against him.

Now, it would seem as if the league made the absolute right decision based on their reasoning for the suspension. The league quoted Section 18-A.5 of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement as their cause for Voynov’s suspension.

"“The League may suspend the Player pending the League’s formal review and disposition of the matter where the failure to suspend the Player during this period would create a substantial risk of material harm to the legitimate interests and/or reputation of the League.”"

While the NHL did not comment on the details of Slava Voynov’s arrest, TMZ has shined a little more light on the incredibly disappointing situation.

It seems as if the woman involved in the matter, who has yet to be named, was so badly injured in the alleged beating that she required hospitalization. TMZ says that Voynov accompanied the woman to the hospital and was arrested soon after when hospital staffers notified the authorities about the suspected abuse.

As of this point, Slava Voynov has been released from the California jail on $50k bond.

This could not be worse news for the National Hockey League. Given the amount of negative publicity that the National Football League has been under recently for the incidents involving players like Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, you would think that the league would want to distance themselves as far as they could from this type of situation.

Thankfully, Commissioner Gary Bettman and the league decided to move quickly on this to minimalize the “scandal” involved with the criminal proceeding.

Something like this certainly does not bode well, not only for the National Hockey League, but the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings as well.

In addition to the hit this brings to their reputation, they will now be without a solid defenseman in their lineup for the foreseeable future.

Last season, Voynov played in all 82 games with the Kings. In that amount of time, he scored 4 goals and 30 assists for a total of 34 points to accompany his plus-6 rating. So far this season, he has played in a total of 6 games with 2 assists in that period of time.

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out once Voynov eventually gets his day in court; however, we must say that we are incredibly disappointed in this entire situation. Throughout the entire ordeal within the NFL, we have always said to ourselves “this kind of thing wouldn’t happen in the NHL.”

In one respect this still holds true as Bettman has jumped on this situation immediately, therefore cutting down any potential issues while this investigation is still ongoing. Unfortunately, Voynov has proven that there is always one potential bad apple in every bushel. You just have to make sure you pick it before it ruins the rest.

What are your thoughts on this situation based off of the limited information we have available at this point? Do you think Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League made the right decision by suspending Voynov indefinitely? What does this mean for the Kings’ defense?
