The Auburn Tigers have been without a key defender for the last five weeks.

Senior safety Jermaine Whitehead has been serving an indefinite suspension and on Tuesday, Auburn head coach Guz Malzahn reinstated Jermaine Whitehead to the team. He doesn’t know when he will return to game-action, but he has been on the practice field since Sunday.

“He practiced with the team on Sunday, and he’s going to do everything he can to earn his (place) back on the field,” Malzahn said Tuesday via Alex Byington of the Opelika-Auburn News. “I don’t know how long that will take, I don’t have a timetable on it, but we’ll see how that goes.”

Jermaine Whitehead was suspended indefinitely prior to Auburn’s victory over the Kansas State Wildcats back on September 18. There have been reports and speculation that he got into an altercation with an assistant coach but Malzahn refused to discuss the reason for his suspension.

“As far as his reinstatement and what he did, that’s between me and him,” Malzahn said.

Although Jermaine Whitehead playing against the South Carolina Gamecocks hasn’t been ruled out, it could be tough to get him up to speed. During his suspension, he hasn’t been allowed to participate in any team activities – Malzahn told reporters “he hasn’t been a part of anything.”

Junior  Joshua Holsey has started in his place.

Auburn and South Carolina will kick-off from Jordan-Hare Stadium at 7:30 pm EST Saturday night and the game is on the SEC Network.
