Charles Godfrey is no more with the Carolina Panthers. The NFC South leader released the free safety turned cornerback on Tuesday. In his seventh NFL season, Godfrey was coming off a torn Achilles in 2013.
Godfrey did play this past Sunday in the team’s 38-17 defeat to the Green Bay Packers. He had five tackles, three of them solo. That was good for fourth-best on a defense that didn’t play much of it Sunday. He recorded 14 tackles in the Panthers seven games this season.
Maybe the Panthers just never thought he was the same after missing all but two games last season? His production had started to tail off prior to the 2013 injury. He had just two interceptions in each of the 2011 and 2012 seasons after grabbing five interceptions in the 2010 season. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera made a short statement about Godfrey.
"Making this move was difficult because Charles has been a large part of what we have done since I came to Carolina four years ago. He has always tried to everything we have asked of him and worked extremely hard. He is an outstanding young man and we wish him the best."
For his career, Godfrey has 281 tackles with 11 interceptions and three sacks.
