Major League Baseball teams are discouraged from announcing major news during the postseason and World Series. You have the entire winter to make moves, after all. Can’t you just wait a week or two?
Apparently the Philadelphia Phillies were just too excited to wait when it came to their contract extension with journeyman pitcher Jerome Williams. On Tuesday, just hours before the start of Game 1 of the World Series, the Phillies announced a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Williams.
If Williams continues to turn his career around with the Phillies, the deal could be worth even more money.
With the Phillies giving him one of his last second chances last season, Williams thrived in a small sample. In nine starts, the 32-year-old right-handed pitcher went 4-2 with a 2.83 ERA. That made him worth this modest risk for the Phillies.
And hey, they weren’t trying to step on anybody’s toes with the timing of their announcement.
Just imagine the eye-rolls in the MLB offices with that request.
