After it became clear they were not going to get their hands on
‘ forward Carmelo Anthony, the Chicago Bulls turned their attention to
‘ free agent power forward Pau Gasol. The Bulls were able to lock down a deal with Pau Gasol, who signed a three-year contract.
Pau Gasol is expected to step right in at power forward for Carlos Boozer, who was waived via the amnesty clause and is now with the Lakers. Pau Gasol will team with center Joakim Noah, the 2013-2014 Defensive Player of the Year, to make up one of the most talented front courts in the NBA.
However, some believe the two will have issues playing together on offense.
“One problem for the Bulls is that playing alongside Noah offensively is not at all conducive to his game,” writes Nate Duncan of Basketball Insiders. “Noah provides little spacing, and he has struggled to do anything offensively finishing at the basket. He was never a great finisher, and the return from knee surgery hasn’t helped.”
In fact, Duncan even suggests it would be better to use Pau Gasol off of the bench.
“I would love to see Pau with Mirotic and McDermott on the second unit so he can go to work with some spacing against backups,” Duncan explained. “Hopefully that unit could avoid getting killed on defense against backups as well.”
Of course, Pau Gasol likely wouldn’t want any part of being a sixth man.
Pau Gasol averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds 3.4 assists and 1.5 blocks per game last season while shooting 48.0% from the field, 28.6% from beyond the arc and 73.6% from the free throw line last season.
