The San Francisco Giants plan to use outfielder Michael Morse, hobbled since September with an oblique injury, as the team’s designated hitter in the World Series when the Giants are visiting the Kansas City Royals.

The World Series used to be the only time MLB fans could see National League teams use the designated hitter, and American League pitchers hit, and while the luster has faded, the designated hitter could help out the San Francisco Giants, who plan to use Michael Morse there:

Morse would typically be the team’s left fielder, but he injured his oblique in September, and has been limited ever since, and was left off the Giant’s NLDS roster completely. He was added to the roster for the NLCS, where he

Even a limited Morse could really help San Francisco here; Morse is one of the team’s better hitters against left-handed pitchers, and the Giants have struggled against lefties in the playoffs, with the caveat that it’s only been 10 games and they’ve been mostly without Morse and completely without outfielder Angel Pagan. And since the Giants don’t normally use a DH, Morse won’t be displacing anyone from the lineup; Travis Ishikawa is expected to be San Francisco’s primary left fielder. For games at AT&T Park in San Francisco, Morse will likely be limited to pinch-hitting duties.

Game One of the World Series is tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern.
