It may sound interesting in theory, but Steve Spurrier’s not coming back to coach the Florida Gators

Don’t add South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s name among the potential replacements if Will Muschamp is let go from Florida.

“I tell everybody my next move is going to be to Crescent Beach, Fla.,” Spurrier said. “That’s where my next move is going to be to.”

That’s not quite Gainsville, as Crescent Beach happens to be where Spurrier and his family own a beach home.

Spurrier coached at Florida from 1990-2001, winning the 1996 national championship while at his alma mater. He won 122 games with the Gators, where he also won six SEC Coach of the Year honors and remains the school’s most successful coach. He is in the midst of his tenth season with the Gamecocks, where his 81-42 record has made him the most successful coach at that program.

The Spurrier (back) to Florida speculation came from CBSSports.com college football writer Dennis Dodd, whose column suggested that Spurrier would be a “good bridge” from Muschamp to a younger head coach.

“How cool would it be if Spur Dog ends his career as sort of a “bridge” to the next guy at Florida? Who knows, the way he’s going Spurrier might last another 10 years,” said Dodd. He’s 69, looks 49 and all he wants to do is win.”

“But no one could blame Spurrier for coming home,” Dodd continues. “Not South Carolina, not the media, certainly not Florida fans who need a special brand of salvation for their program at the moment. Actually, check your calendars. Spurrier is coming home — Nov. 15, the Gamecocks go to Florida. The question is, will he stay?”
