Oklahoma State University is suing New Mexico State over the resemblance of the Aggies’ mascot to the Cowboys’ mascot “Pistol Pete.”

With all of the NCAA colleges and universities that share mascots, this has the potential to be an annoying trend.

Seriously, can you imagine if all of these schools with ‘Bulldogs’ started suing one another because all of their mascots looked alike? That’s a nightmare.

This mascot situation is a little more unique. At issue is the use of a pistol-wielding cowboy as a mascot at New Mexico State University. The Aggies are under fire because their mascot bears a resemblance to ‘Pistol Pete’ at Oklahoma State.

KRQE News in Las Cruces reports the following about a lawsuit filed by Oklahoma State against New Mexico State:

"A powerhouse college is suing New Mexico State University, claiming the Aggies have plagiarized their mascot. The suit claims it is “confusingly similar” to its own and includes an image of Pistol Pete that NMSU has used in the past when it first adopted the mascot in the ’60s.Oklahoma State University said it had the mascot first and trademarked it, then New Mexico State copied it. The university filed a lawsuit against NMSU in federal court on Monday."

Confusingly similar? Not really. They’re just similar, right? I’m not sure if there is anything confusing about it.

What they mean, of course, is that the logo will ‘confuse’ people into thinking that New Mexico State is actually Oklahoma State. I’m just not really sure that will be an issue, but here’s betting that New Mexico State will have a cowboy with some different features in the near future.
