This series will replace the home-and-home series that Texas A&M previously had scheduled with the Oregon Ducks. The Aggies backed out of that arrangement and then proceeded to make this announcement.
Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman had the following to say about the series with Clemson (via ESPN.com):
"The Aggies will host the Tigers on Sept. 8, 2018, before traveling to Death Valley on Sept. 7, 2019.“We are excited to play the Clemson Tigers, who have been on Texas A&M’s non-conference schedule previously,” Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman said in a statement. “As a fellow land-grant institution, Clemson is very similar to Texas A&M with a great football tradition and passionate fans. This will be a great non-conference series for both schools.”"
As we already learned with the series with Oregon that got cancelled, a lot can change in five years. It is hard to know where these schools will stand, those if current trajectories are any indication this should make for an entertaining pair of match-ups.
Then again, maybe something else will change that gives cause for one school or the other to back out of the arrangement. Given the current fluidity in NCAA Football, you cannot rule anything out.
Pending any such developments, Texas A&M and Clemson will play a home-and-home series in 2018 and 2019.
