San Diego Chargers’ tight end Antonio Gates will go down as one of the best tight ends the NFL has ever seen. On Thursday night, he added a franchise accomplishment to his outstanding career.
With a catch in the first half of Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos, Gates set the all-time Chargers’ receiving yards record.
Gates now has 9,596 yards in his career, an incredible figure for any player. It’s not just amazing for a tight end, it’s amazing for any player. He has 749 receptions and 94 touchdowns to go along with all of those yards.
This season he has shown some spring in his step after some up and down seasons recently. Through seven games, Gates has 363 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns came in a dominant performance against the Seattle Seahawks, as Gates has clearly been a key player for the Chargers.
With his quarterback Philip Rivers playing at an MVP level this season, there should be plenty of numbers to be had for Gates and the rest of the offensive weapons for the Chargers this season.
