The Tennessee Titans have announced they will start rookie QB Zach Mettenberger in Week 8 of the NFL, instead of Jake Locker, and reports indicate the Titans organization might be ready to move on from Locker completely.

The Tennessee Titans announced last night they’re turning the quarterback job over to rookie Zach Mettenberger over incumbent Jake Locker for their Week 8 match up against the Houston Texans, but unless Mettenberger really struggles, the Titans could be over Locker completely:

The Titans appear to be fed up with Locker, who has a strong throwing arm but is inaccurate, and Locker’s inability to stay healthy is also a factor for the Titans brass as well, as backup Charlie Whitehurst has started three games this season for Tennessee already.

Locker was the team’s first-round pick in 2011, when the Titans tabbed him with the eighth overall pick, but he’s played only 27 games in his four years in the NFL due to different injuries, and it looks like Tennessee was aware of this possibility weeks ago:

Mettenberger was picked in the sixth round of this year’s draft, and the Titans didn’t allow any of their three quarterbacks to speak with the media after the decision was made. The odds haven’t been good for rookie quarterbacks this year in the NFL, but it looks like Mettenberger will have to either completely implode or get hurt for Locker to have another shot at the job in Tennessee, and it’s certainly possible another NFL team would be interested in Locker should be be released.
