Former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice said he believes the Percy Harvin trade was the best thing for the Seattle Seahawks to regain their identity.
Less than a year after his kick return electrified the Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl victory, Percy Harvin has been traded to the New York Jets. While many have had their opinions one way or another on the trade, former Seahawk and retired wide receiver Sidney Rice had a surprising opinion on the matter, telling reporters the trade was for the best in Seattle, where the defending champs sit at 3-3.

“I was surprised, but at the same time, it may have been the best thing for the team,” Rice said per ESPN. “It’s tough losing a guy like Percy. He’s one of a kind. The league has never seen a player like Percy Harvin. But there are certain things you’ve got to do to get the ball in his hands and it’s tough. It takes away from what this team was built upon and that’s Marshawn Lynch. I think now they will get back on track. I think it will end up being the best thing for both Percy and Seattle. I’m sure there’s no bad blood.”
It’s interesting that Rice goes out of his way to dub Marshawn Lynch the fuel of the offense given the bad blood that boiled up between player and team on the heels of Lynch’s offseason holdout. It’s all business between players though and Rice, who retired after last season, stands by Lynch and the rest of his former teammates.
“I just told them to keep up their pace and get back to Seahawks football,” Rice said. “If they do, they’ll be back to where we were last year.”
If the Seahawks do return to the Super Bowl, it will be without Percy Harvin. If Rice’s inside knowledge is any indication, this could be a matter of addition by subtraction.
