Toby Gerhart is nearing a return for the Jacksonville Jaguars after practicing Wednesday for the first time in two weeks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have a rare but welcome controversy at a skill position. Just as the team was finding solid production without free agent pickup Toby Gerhart, they now have Gerhart returning to practice on a limited basis. With Denard Robinson having a career game in Week 7 against the Cleveland Browns, the team can now turn to the luxury of deciding which running back to offer top minutes.

After missing two games with a foot sprain, Toby Gerhart is practicing once more, signalling his imminent return. Meanwhile, Denard Robinson tore up the Cleveland Browns, giving the team a rare conundrum. For now, offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was content to watch the two practice and play and see how the competition unfolds.

“I think we’ll continue to mix and match a little bit,” Fisch told the Florida Times-Union. “I don’t know exactly how that will all play out yet.”

Gerhart had been averaging a weak 2.6 yards per carry before he was deactivated to recover from an injury he’d been trying to play through. This should keep the door open for Robinson, who has steadily improved and progressed since arriving in Jacksonville.

“He showed that he is understanding the run game better,” Fisch said of Robinson.

The two running backs will have a chance to stake their claim to more carries against the Miami Dolphins. If Robinson or Gerhart can create clear separation from the other, expect the coaching staff to ride the hot hand in the backfield.
