Still, hearing that an elite right-handed pitcher needs surgery- on his right elbow, nonetheless- isn’t what any fan wants to hear during the off-season. St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright doesn’t seem to have a choice, though- he underwent surgery on Friday, just days after the team’s general manager promised that a surgical procedure wasn’t on the horizon.
It seems like the surgery will keep him from practicing for four to six weeks, but then he should be good to go. According to BLS, the pitcher admitted that his elbow had been giving him ‘discomfort’ dating back to June- so the surgery may have been a last resort alternative, but it certainly wasn’t a shock to him or his team.
Wainwright never used his elbow as an excuse for his play, but it’s possible that it affected game outcomes for a significant period of time. Hopefully, this will be the first and only surgery for the 33-year-old starter.
