One-time Formula One star Michael Shumacher, who was nearly killed in a skiing accident last December, could recover within three years.

“I have seen some progress but I would say give him time. It’s like other patients, we are in a timescale that ranges from one year to three years, so it takes patience,” Dr Jean-Francois Payen said.

“Life after a brain injury is littered with stages,” he said. “It must progress, we hope, but we must give him time.”

Schumacher was moved from Grenoble, France to Lausanne in June before moving to Switzerland, where he is recovering at his family home. Payen said he has made several visits to check up on the 45-year-old Schumacher, who is a seven-time Formula One World Champion.

“He’s in very favourable conditions. This plays a big role. The family environment is anyway best for the patient. His wife is surrounded by excellent advice and has implemented all it takes for it to move forward.”

Unsung, yet also critical to helping Schumacher’s progress, was how Payen and his staff was able to neutralize the media crush that came upon he and his staff immediately after Schumacher was admitted. Payen said they were able to create a ‘media bubble’ that allowed them to work without pressure, although one reporter went as far as reportedly dressing up as a priest in order to gain information.
