Jones finished his second season on the bench last year with a 20-14 record and a 9-9 record in the SEC and a second round appearance in the NIT. Jones went 19-12 overall and 9-9 in the SEC in his first season as the head coach two years ago. The 39 wins are the most in the first two years of a head coach in program history.

The first two seasons have failed to result in an NCAA Tournament appearance, but Jones has recruited well in bringing Jarrell Martin and Jordan Mickey who will be the team’s top two players in 2014-2015 and freshman Elbert Robinson as well as his big recruiting coup of Ben Simmons, the No. 1 recruit in the 2015 class.

Jones will make $1.5 million as part of the two-year extension and LSU athletic director Joe Alleva commented on the signing via LSUSports.net.

"“Johnny has our men’s basketball program heading in the right direction,” said LSU Vice-Chancellor/Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. “On the court, his up-tempo style and the energy in which his teams play is something that is appealing to our fans and is attractive to recruits. Off the floor, Johnny and his staff have done a great job of making academics and community involvement a priority. We look forward to having Coach Jones lead our men’s basketball team for many years to come.”"

Jones was one the 1981 Final Four team at LSU and after graduating in 1984 served as an assistant coach on legendary LSU head coach Dale Brown’s staff until 1997.
