According to NBC’s Pro Football Talk, a federal judge has ruled that New Jersey cannot go forward with plans to implement sports betting. This is the second time in the past two decades that this has happened, since the state previously tried to “circumvent” the 1992 federal ruling that blocked states from adding sports wagering.
While this may be important news for New Jersey, it’s also relatively unsurprising. It affects more than Jersey, though, as there have been rumors circulating since this summer that Las Vegas could become home to an NHL franchise within the next few years.
Judging by the negative response to sports betting in states that are already host to professional sports franchises, I would have to guess that this doesn’t bode well for Sin City’s campaign to become home to a team. In any case, the ruling will stand until “the litigation filed against New Jersey is resolved on Monday”. It seems most likely that the ruling will end in the favor of the NFL, who have strongly campaigned against the addition of sports betting in states such as New Jersey, and the state will be forced to back off on their pursuit of sports betting.
Sorry, Jersey.
