Rumors abound that there’s a rift in the locker room centered around Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson.
The Seattle Seahawks were projected to enter the 2014 season on the same roll with which they ended the 2013 season. Sporting the best defense in the league and a rising star at QB, the Seahawks were expected to put their stamp on the best era of football in Seattle’s history. A 3-3 start has put some of that in question, which isn’t a big deal at this juncture, especially when compared with some of the disturbing rumors floating out of the ‘Hawks locker room, which have been exposed by the Percy Harvin deal.

The Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman had a great rundown of what’s been going on in Seattle, which is largely a jumbled mess of whispered rumors and conjecture. Still, there are consistencies in his story and that of other reporters, which lends some credence to the idea that there is a rift in the Seahawks locker room centered around quarterback Russell Wilson.
It starts with the Harvin trade, which Freeman alleges came as a result of Harvin disrespecting Wilson. Freeman notes, “one Seahawks player said the biggest reason the team traded the wide receiver was his increasing animosity toward Wilson.”
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen sorta kinda refutes that, saying Wilson wanted to help Harvin, but that hardly holds water because it doesn’t account for Harvin’s take, which is murky at best from where we sit.
So what beef could teammates possibly have with a quarterback who led the team to a Super Bowl win in just his second season? Freeman lists the details, but remember that nothing has been publicly confirmed by a Seattle player or coach, nor will it likely ever be.
1) Freeman says, “The main issue some players seem to have with Wilson is they think he’s too close to the front office.”
2) He also notes, “I’m told he doesn’t always take the blame with teammates for mistakes he makes. In Wilson’s mind, a bad throw isn’t always his fault.”
3) And this is the kicker, “My feeling on this—and it’s backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players—is that some of the black players think Wilson isn’t black enough.” Oh dear. We’ll just leave that one alone.
Whatever issues players have with Wilson should be reconciled with the fact that life could be much worse. The Seahawks could have one of the 25 or so starting quarterbacks who are worse than Russell Wilson. Like it or not, the QB is the face of the team and if you scratch the face, you’ve got to go. Just ask Percy Harvin.
